A longtime “pre-theater go-to”, this “pretty” Hell’s Kitchen New American restaurant offers its “interesting” range of dishes at “fair”-for-the-area prices, snappily supplied by an efficient crew; the “bustling” vibe verges on “frenetic” at “curtain time”, but others it’s an “enjoyable” “hang”.

Not quite as clamorous, but also no less dramatic, is Thalia, an 18- month-old restaurant on the corner of 50th Street and Eighth avenue. The dining room’s soaring 25 foot ceilings, elliptical bar, giant posters and massive columns make a fitting tribute to the neighborhood.

Thalia, a newcomer to New York’s Theater DIstrict, has a wine list that’s more like a two-man show than a grandiose musical. The compact 120-selection wine list is organized by body and flavor rather than by varietal.

When you drink this, you should see the Danube by moonlight,” the sommelier said, pouring a rivulet of up-to-the-minute gruner veltliner in my glass. ”You will also see edelweiss on the Alps.” I looked hard and detected the ghost of a smile.

Well, Thalia is the Muse of comedy, after all. It’s also a confusing name for a serious restaurant. Many New Yorkers still think of Thalia as the much-loved repertory movie house on the Upper West Side, and those who do not might have doubts about a new restaurant on the edge of the theater district, which, by the way, is rapidly losing its hard-won reputation as a joke when it comes to food.
